Fenland Junior Newsletter – May 2014

Only a few more weeks before our junior club sessions are over for another year.  We have had a really successful season, and, for the first time I had to increase our number of sessions from three to six. Our teams did well in the leagues: second in divisions II and III and first in the division IV, the under 11 age group.

Remember to ask if you would like to take part in small group sessions until the end of term and I am also booking a few individual sessions.

I am missing quite a few pairs of goggles at the moment so if I have lent you any, or if you find any in the bottom of your bag, can you please return them.

The Club Junior Championships are now underway so please check who you have to play and, if they attend a different session, let me know so we can find a time convenient for you both.

Congratulations to the Club Player of the Year, Harry Winter, who has attended nearly every club session, played in our interclub matches and County End of Season Tournament, been a great helper with the younger players and improved his own squash skills.

Well done Harry.

Congratulations also to the most Improved Player of the Year

Malik Bilen.  Malik only began playing squash last September and has had a meteoric rise up the club ladder to the top 5, a remarkable achievement for a ten year old.  He was part of the winning Under 11 club team, reached the semi-finals of the under 11 End of Season tournament and won the U13 plate competition. Well done Malik.

There are also lots of ESR OPEN COUNTY COMPETITIONS taking place if you enjoy competition, and these can be found on the

England Squash and Racketball website:   www.englandsquashandracketball.com

Playing completely new players on unknown courts is a really good way to improve your squash and develop your match skills. Hannah played in the Norfolk Open on the 27th April and will now attain a NATIONAL RANKING. You only need to enter a few tournaments a year and the Cambs County Closed counts as one of them.  (You can enter more tournaments if you are keen to move up the rankings quickly).

To register, go on to the ESR website and look up ‘Rankings’.  You will be asked to e mail rankings@englandsquashandracketball.com  You should ask to be included on the national rankings in future and give your name, county, date of birth and any tournaments played, including the Cambs County Closed in September – they have the results.  The rankings are updated at the beginning of each month.

All the juniors who have represented the club this year at tournaments or matches have been invited to a ‘Play the experts’ evening on Monday May 19th 6.30pm onwards when they will be playing our men’s teams. – Those who are brave enough to turn up —–that refers to the men, not the juniors!

Have a good summer
